It’s not just four Uighurs
January 28, 2013Dear Sir,As you are aware, Mr Acting Editor, my letter to your good self last week concerning the Uighurs dilemma contained a paragraph which, for whatever reason, was not printed, albeit it formed an integral part of what I was wanting to impart, which was:“Indeed, ‘humanitarian’ was the furthest from their (Ewart Brown and David Burch that is) thoughts, given the Uighur’s dilemma today. And, from the news recently emerging, we now have not four, not five, not six, not seven, not eight, not nine but ten members of the Uighur family currently residing in Bermuda, with another two (babies) soon to join them. In three-and-half years, we have gone from four to ten Uighurs, and counting. These are numbers that could (and should) have been more ably absorbed into a country larger than ours of 65,000 people.”Lawyer Rick Woolridge in today’s newspaper refers to the Universal Declarations of Human Rights and the ‘seeking of a level playing field’. It would seem that the country of origin for these poor Uighurs has not provided a level playing field for them. In Article 13 (2) it states: “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country”. Obviously, the Uighurs are not able to enjoy free return to their own country.Had the instigators of this ‘humanitarian deed’ taken note of the above-mentioned UDHR and sought out responsible legal advice from the right quarters before starting out on this covert mission, we might have ended up with a more equitable situation that Bermudians would have found more palatable. It’s not that Bermudians are unsympathetic to the Uighurs dilemma; they are, however, still very much unsympathetic to the instigators who landed Bermuda and the Uighurs in this sorry mess. And lawyer Mr Woolridge mentioned on the Let’s Talk’ programme this evening that we are talking about giving Bermuda Status to (only) four people. This group of four has grown exponentially in the short time they have been here, so unless my maths is wrong, it’s a lot more than four.E CORDEIRO
