Don’t give Uighurs status

January 26, 2013Dear Sir,I am writing concerning the granting of Bermuda status to the four Uighurs. I understand their situation, however I don’t think it would be fair to grant them status, when there are so many adults and children that were born here or have called Bermuda their home for over 20 years and will never have Bermuda status. These people will never be able to own a home or own a business. In many cases their children are asked to leave Bermuda when they reach their 18th birthday. Even when a non-Bermudian marries a Bermudian they have to wait ten years before they have the right to apply for Bermuda status. Children born in Bermuda to a long-term resident, also will never have the right to Bermuda status. So I don’t think that the Uighurs, who have only been here for four years be granted Bermuda status. Maybe, they should be granted long-term residence certificates and maybe after they have been here for ten years have the right to apply for Bermuda status. That would still be more than the regular long-term certificate holders have.PROUD TO BE BERMUDIANWarwick
