Kudos to Mr Starling

February 6, 2013Dear Sir,I congratulate Jonathan Starling for being courageous enough to do a sit-in at the Home Affairs Ministry in order to obtain, as his right as a citizen, Government’s policy document on the abolition of term limits. Mr Starling has indicated that he is neutral on the policy but has concerns that the One Bermuda Alliance broke its pre-election pledge. The OBA stated that they would suspend term limits for two years and engage in a thorough review involving consultation with key stakeholders. However, when they became Government they instead abolished the policy all together and without the consultation they promised. As I have stated in previously, my personal opinion is that certain occupations within the international business, medical fields and policing should have work permits granted for automatic three year periods with the ability of applying for two more extensions. This would allow work permit holders up to nine years maximum on the Island in certain job categories. The OBA would do well to remember that their term is for five years, and that they won purely because a large enough percentage of the labour supporters disillusioned with the Progressive Labour Party decided not to vote. Arrogance is why the PLP lost and arrogance, such as Minister Fahy’s dictatorial position, could hinder the OBA being reelected.CHERYL POOLEYDevonshire
