OBA deserves credit
February 7, 2013Dear Sir,There has been much debate on the term limit issue. The OBA has been accused of reneging on a pre-election promise that they would suspend the policy and undertake a review. We have now seen that the policy has been abolished. Maybe the Government thought that a review was insufficient and abolition was necessary to install much needed confidence into the International Business sector.Jonathan Starling was so upset that he staged a sit-in to show his displeasure. Perhaps he has a point or perhaps not, it is up to us to decide. What intrigues this writer is that the PLP made many promises that they did not keep and Mr Starling said nothing. This does not make the reneging of promises acceptable. However it does suggest that whilst the PLP were not held to account for their actions, he does feel comfortable questioning the OBA. To that end, may I congratulate the OBA for creating an environment where people can stand up for what they believe. Maybe under the PLP Government, Mr Starling felt intimidated and therefore kept his thoughts to himself? On the issue of the abolition of the term limit policy, whilst the OBA’s action may not be popular with some, this writer agrees with it. International business has stated that the policy has had a negative effect. In these challenging economic times, Bermuda must be seen to be open for business. Will the abolition lead to more jobs being created, only time will tell. However, one thing is certain, the OBA deserves credit for trying to get us out of or current malaise. Well done!CHANGERSandys
