Time to get back to fiscal prudence

February 10, 2013– Dear Sir,The Auditor General gave the past PLP government a qualified audit for the last year. This is the fourth year in a row the AG has not been able to make head or tail out of the financial dealings of Government. When are we going to get back to fiscal prudence so that the hard-working taxpayers of Bermuda do not feel taken advantage of?Many of us believe that fiscal mismanagement has been the norm in recent years. Has there been malfeasance, corruption or at the least unethical behaviour exhibited by persons in position of trust? If so, could it be widespread? Have financial instructions been ignored by our civil servants? Perhaps unwarranted ministerial interference when it comes to the carrying out of civil servants duties? Who knows, we get little meaningful answers. What we do know is that we are in a huge debt spiral, with no clear way forward. Public Access to Information is limited. The Whistle Blower’s Act is not in place and laws to prevent corruption are either not drawn or acted upon.A new day is upon us with the recent election result. Will we see new and improved methods of financial control, leading to accountability, transparency and a trust in our Government? Only time will tell. For the sake of our island home, I hope we get answers soon!CONCERNEDSandys
