February 14, 2013Dear Sir,This morning I drove in from the east end at my usual 40-45kph. Illegally high speed I know, but a compromise. Around Bailey’s Bay I was tailgated by two huge SUVs and a regular car, in turn, before they roared past at points I considered potentially dangerous.Had cars or bikes come round the corners just ahead there would have been some harsh braking and possibly collisions. They got past me without incident. By the time we got to Flatts two went through the village and one went up Town Hill.I went over the first speed bump seven seconds after the second car that passed me. I then followed the two cars along North Shore to Barker’s Hill roundabout where we went our separate ways. Their irresponsible driving gained them all of ten seconds. Was it worth the risk?We need speed cameras set up, at least on our main roads, with automatic fines starting at 51kph with an increasing penalty every five kph. Non-payment of fines within 30 days to result is vehicle impounding until paid and failing that confiscation of the vehicle owner’s passport.We need to get real about poor driving in Bermuda to save lives, lifelong injury consequences and the financial cost to us all. Camera fines will pay for the system installation and monitoring and then hopefully drivers will learn and leave a little earlier and drive cautiouslyRoad user in hopePembroke
