The tailgating habit
February 14, 2013Dear Sir,In a recent article, it was noted that following too closely is one of the most common reasons for crashes in Bermuda. I believe it, but what blows my mind is that this bad habit of tailgating applies in every situation. As a motorbike driver in Bermuda, I can attest to the fact that people in cars also tailgate people on bikes. Do Bermudians understand that bikes don’t have airbags or even an outer body to protect the driver? Do they get that if something — even the slightest mistake — happened they wouldn’t be crashing into a bumper ... they would be running over a person. I guess not because this kind of tailgating happens to me all the time. And I’m not a slow driver. In fact, it just happened to me again tonight on my way home from work as I was driving in the car and in the rain. All the way along South Shore Road I had the pleasure of a woman in a silver car, driving just inches behind me the entire way. Finally, at Barnes Corner, I motioned for her to go around me. I would just like to ask the driver how she will sleep at night after she kills someone on a bike because she’s a bad driver. I wonder if she will ever forget what it felt like to run over a body. A person who probably was alive until she couldn’t stop in time. I wonder if the splats of blood will ever completely wash off her tires. I’m not sure I — or anyone in their right mind — would be too comfortable with killing someone like that.VICKIBSmith’s
