Debt ceiling increase astonishing

– February 23, 2013Dear Sir,Astonished and perplexed! That’s how I felt when I heard the specifics about the Budget plans released by the government yesterday.I’m 100 percent sure that I was not the only who shared those feelings about the Budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The Budget ceiling has been raised by so much money I don’t dare to write the amount in this newspaper for fair of being the cause of raising the blood pressure of my fellow Bermudians that will read this letter. The Budget, in my respectful submission, puts a bigger strain on the working class Bermudian. The very ones who the government should be easing things up on are the ones that will be lashed with increases in various taxes and increased prices. There is an article that was printed in this newspaper on January 19, entitled “Cannonier vows to not make the PLP’s ‘mistakes’ on consultants”. In this article the Premier said that job creation was one of his government’s priorities. He states: “Ten thousand people have left the Island - they include families and businesses who have taken their intellectual capital and spending power with them-both of which are vital for our survival.”One can come to the conclusion that the Premier is sincerely concerned with the increasing number of Bermudians up and leaving the Island in search of better living elsewhere, however, talk and actions are two very different things and in my humble submissions the Budget released yesterday that has a plethora of increases in cost for the average Bermudian does not compliment the position that the One Bermuda Alliance put forward to voters that they would make things easier of the people of this Island.Bermudians are a very determined and tenacious people and I know that we will make it through these tough times to see better days. I understand that it is early in the term, and there is still very much the so room for positive change to take place during the government’s term, however, I say to my fellow Bermudian people, look at the promises made in the election campaign by the current government, and look at the recent decisions and propositions that they have provided thus far and you be the judge if everything will be copacetic.ERON HILLSandys
