State your intentions
March 4, 2013Dear Sir,There are numerous concerns and sentiments being expressed currently regarding the term limits issue. Some appear to be confused with work permits vs term limits. Term limits were introduced to protect the interests of born Bermudians, regarding their concerns of legitimate equality to real estate, business opportunities, the unethical practices of some employers and not having to compete with the potential acquisition of Bermuda status of ‘Long Term Residents’ (PRC holders). The track record of the One Bermuda Alliance to date appears to be directly targeted to address the concerns of the IB and blue collar guest workers. The government of the day argues that they are earnestly pursuing the job creators interests, subsequently, creating jobs for the average Bermudian. That said, IB historically has not employed the majority of the populace, compared to the hospitality industry. During our heydays, I would venture to say that a good 70 percent of the workforce sought, and were successful in finding employment in that industry. In the Throne Speech and Budget presentation, there was a lack of emphasis placed on that industry, apart from the Tourism Authority, which in my opinion is a continuation of the Progressive Labour Party’s Tourism Plan.Further, it is now proposed to offer incentives to PRC holders to purchase homes, thereby, decreasing the availability for born Bermudians to acquire property. The fact that children of PRC holders will be eligible for status, in conjunction with the fact that they are heirs to property, undoubtedly should be of concern for future generations. There was talk during the lead-up to the general election that the OBA endeavoured to expand the voter base. In all that has transpired thus far, it is quite evident that they are determined to follow-through on this initiative, with hopes of acquiring sufficient numbers to retain power at the next election, along with the swing voter. For what other reason would so much emphasis be placed on the abolition term limits? It would be interesting to know if the Minister of Home Affairs is willing to state his intentions regarding PRC holders, their children and potential status of the aforementioned.GLENN CHASEWarwick
