Time to take a stand

March 13, 2013Dear Sir,The other day I noticed something that just crawled under my skin. As a passenger in a car on my way home from work, I took a glance inside the bus stop at the junction of St Johns Road and Berkeley Road. What I noticed was hate graffiti. The anti-Filipino graffiti that the current and previous Government was so “disgusted” about nearly two years ago remained. Smeared across the wall was “Filipino whore go home” at a bus stop that is used by students who attend Berkeley. “Why is this graffiti still here?” I pondered, “What effect would this language have on the students that use this bus stop? Do they think this is appropriate? Is this the kind of language they would use in the future?”. Probably not, maybe, who knows, but still this disturbs me.I thought Dale Butler would have been more proactive about this when he spoke so passionately about our Filipino community. I don’t blame him, but I’m still a little disappointed. A good idea might be to gather some students willing to volunteer to repaint the bus stop to learn how to take pride in our beautiful country and that hate speech is not welcome since our previous Government chose to forget about it. This would not be to punish the students for something they did not do, but rather to show the Island that Bermuda’s youth takes pride in our beautiful Island and to take a stance against xenophobia.BROTELHOSmith’s
