Something must be done

March 19, 2013Dear Sir,On Sunday, February 24, 2013, at approx 9.40am, I was involved in a serious RTC on Middle Road, Devonshire, near the junction of Tee Street. Yes I hear you sigh, another accident at this seriously dangerous junction. A taxi coming out of Tee Street smashed right into my pathway, I was heading into town from Middle Road on my motorcycle, when the driver veered straight into my pathway, knocking me from my bike into, fortunately for me, no incoming traffic, however causing me to break my pelvis . I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people involved who assisted me that morning at the scene. Thank you to Susan Brewster, Linda the off-duty nurse, the off-duty police officer, Alan and his team from Bermuda Fire Services, Antonio and partner from the KEMH ambulance service, all the emergency doctors and nurses at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Thank you to Dr Panagal Chelvam and his team, the nurses and nurses aides in Perry Ward: Queenie, Brendalin, Rita Savoury, Kennedy, Carol, Zaynab, Leah, Angela and Paulette and also Donna. Also a huge thanks to all my physiotherapists: Jenson, Shamay, G’nye, Antoinette, Shara and Natasha who had to put up with all the blood, sweat and tears of frustration.I would also like to thank all my friends and family for their support and for keeping me sane through it all. I am only half way through my recovery and everyday I get stronger but still in so much pain. Something needs to be done about this junction on Tee Street. How many accidents have there been on that stretch of road? Why can’t Government/Road Safety come up with an ideal solution to stopping as many accidents happening there. This has been going on for years and enough is enough as we all know there are so many accidents occurring there constantly. This is my second bike accident in 14 months and in the last one was a hit and run on Chaingate Hill, in Devonshire. The driver there smashed directly into me and took off through Green Acres Road never to be found and again. I was badly injured. Someone up there sure has been looking out for me, the third time may not be so lucky so no more bikes for me. Drivers please start paying attention and stop all the ignorance on our roads, it could very well be you next. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I am here to tell the tale, unlike some of our other road users.STACEY CALLANDER-PITCHERDevonshire
