Dear Sir,

Sadly, I have to agree with ‘Sensible’ about the declining state of the Botanical Gardens — right now it certainly does not deserve that designation. A botanical garden is not only about special collections of plants, all of which should be carefully and correctly labelled, but an equally important element is a research facility (ie a well stocked and well manned library). As librarian working between both BAMZ and Botanical Gardens for many years, I was shocked and appalled when I heard that the Botanical Gardens library had been closed. In my view, with that move, the Botanical Gardens became simply another park.

The library should have been regarded as essential for staff use, research by visiting scientists, students and the general public. Apart from topical books on every aspect of horticulture, there was an immensely important rare book collection, and a current magazine/journal section, plus a computer database that required routine updating. In talking to garden staff, many of whom have taken great pride in their work over the years, I get the impression that they are both frustrated and discouraged right now. Let’s hope that the Botanical Gardens can be brought back up to par fast, to be the pride to Bermuda it once was, and a genuine attraction to tourists with an interest in horticulture and the botanical sciences.
