Feral cats are causing harm
June 12, 2013Dear Sir,Yet another murder occurred yesterday. Based upon the crime scene the victim was mutilated. We have set up a crime watch in those areas known to be frequented by those who cause harm. We are told they are territorial and despite best efforts to neutralise their growth in numbers we again have newborns. We were not asked if we wanted to play host to these miscreants, an organisation simply decided that they would set up feeding point, so all of their clients in our neighbourhood congregate near our home.I’m sure that those who feed them have a sense of doing good, but when the food is gone they simply walk away and it is the neighbourhood that pays. Our tax is not primarily monetary and one could say we are not the primary victims of this “taxation” without representation, but we see the carnage almost daily. Who are our uninvited ‘guests’? Feral cats. These are not the cuddly family pets depicted in advertisements, they are truly wild animals. Our birds and lizards are preyed upon, our gardens are covered in unburied faeces and our furniture is sprayed. Our once relaxing gardens are now odoriferous playgrounds for unwanted intruders. It would be interesting to know how may people, outside of the Bermuda Feline Assistance group of activists and their friends, actually want feral cats in Bermuda. Feral chickens are bad enough but at least they are periodically culled. The capture, neuter and spray programme is commendable but a big dark grey Tom and a piebald Molly are never caught in our neighbourhood, of which the two kittens last year and the three this year are testament to.Those neighbours within a 300-yard territorial radius of feeding stations should be canvassed and asked if they want feral cats in their neighbourhood. If the voters say no the station should be moved. If the cats won’t follow then they should be captured and put up for adoption. If not adopted within a suitable period, they should be humanely euthanised. If the voters say yes, then that is democracy at work and we will live with the decision.HOW WOULD YOU VOTE?Pembroke
