We are watching very closely, OBA

June 15, 2013Dear Sir,May I comment on your headline, ‘Government to clarify truck permit rules’.The OBA before the election stated they would not allow dumpsters to be used illegally. The trailor dumpsters were allowed to do illegal work with Dr. Ewart’s Brown’s permission and as a result, many small independent truckers were put out of business. Many of the small truck owner businesses watched in dismay as their livelihoods were snatched away from them by suspected greedy individuals. The permits, some of which cost upward of $80,000, had/have become worth less than the paper they were written on. Many small truckers have been put out of work as their dream to run a small successful business has been shattered. This was as a direct result of the former Government’s policies to allow big business to crush the small guys. The then Shadow Minister, Shaun Crockwell was in the small independent truckers corner. He suggested at the time that what the PLP were doing was illegal. He even stated that the OBA would be sympathetic to the independent trucker’s plight and see that the trailor dumpsters would only be used for what their legal remit would allow. The Motor Car Act states that only goods not able to be carried in a small truck can be carried in a trailor dumpster truck, or words to that effect. Minister Crockwell stated when asked on talk radio if the amendments would allow dumpsters to carry aggregate or stuff that could be carried in a small truck, he emphatically said ‘no’.Have the OBA now changed their position on this issue? Will they do what is right and help small business and not cave into demands made by big business? We are watching this issue very closely. It could determine whether the OBA breaks an election promise or keeps its word.CHANGERSandys
