Get the approval of the people
July 18, 2013Dear Sir,What is going on with the Hamilton waterfront? That waterfront an integral part of Hamilton Harbour belongs to the people of Bermuda not the Corporation of Hamilton. The Corporation is elected to manage the city, to control and make infrastructure changes to enable the city to function efficiently, not to make major changes to the landscape of Bermuda. Hamilton Harbour is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. It is one of the most beautiful vistas that the people of Bermuda are able to enjoy. No one, not the corporation, not the government, no one has the right to do anything major to the waterfront, including leaseing the waterfront to a developer for 262 years, without the express approval of the people of this country. And that has not happened.I expect the Government to do something about these unbridled events pertaining to the Hamilton waterfront we have been reading about. I expect the Corporation of Hamilton to back up and understand the limitations of it’s remit as a corporation and get on the right process which involves the approval of the people if anything, anything is to be done to the Hamilton waterfront. Otherwise I expect that the people of this country will speak loud and clear about this matter.Someone should tell Mr Michael Maclean of Allied Development Partners not to compare this lease for 262 years with approval that was given for a cargo dock facility for Stevedoring Services people are not stupid. A lot of noise is being made over this lease because people feel the Corporation have overstepped their boundaries and leased the waterfront without any involvement or comment from the people of Bermuda. Plus the lease is to an unknown company. Two hundred and sixty two years is a very long time and we do not like anyone to give away our children’s heritage. It is also the sly way in which it was done, the public were the last to know and the information, when finally made public, did not come from the Corporation. The Corporation are yet to comment. Had it not been for The Royal Gazette’s prowess we would all still be in the dark.My final comment I repeat, we need to hear from the Government. This not a small matter. Whatever happens on the Hamilton Harbor waterfront will affect us for a very, very, long time.QUINTON L EDNESS CBE, JPWarwick
