Giveway sign needs fixing

October 21, 2013

Dear Sir,

Please afford me a little space in your paper.

First let me remind you why this sign was put up.

Approximately two months ago, a public bus was negotiating the Crow Lane roundabout and collided with a car entering the roundabout from Harbour Road. Because of the size of a bus, it encroaches the left or outer lane on the roundabout, thus colliding with the car which has the right of way from 7:30-9:30am.

Now the sign. It was surprisingly posted within a week after the accident.

Maybe this is why it was poorly done, haste.

The words on the inverted triangle sign reads GIVEWAY.

The square sign below begins with MOTORISTS. All GIVE WAY signs are for motorists and need not have the word MOTORISTS written on them. This calls for unnecessary reading at a busy intersection.

The word GIVEWAY should be two words, not one.

The time reads, 7:30 — 9:30am. This means that traffic entering the roundabout from Harbour Road only have to give way to buses from 7:30 — 9:30am.

Buses encroach the left/outer lane on the roundabout period and no time should be posted on the GIVE WAY sign. By the way, tractor trailers also encroach the left/outer lane when negotiating the roundabout and should be included on the sign.

The bottom line; The sign should read in bigger letters:

GIVE WAY

TO BUSES

AND

TRACTOR

TRAILERS

Thank you for the space,

Gerald L. Bean
