Bermuda for Bermudians
December 3, 2013
Dear Sir,
After many years, especially the last several years, of viewing the work force here in Bermuda, I have come to the realisation that those of authority within the Ministry of immigration must be aggressive for the sake of Bermudians’. Because we are so small, what happens in Bermuda is magnified four fold. So be it when we have foreign workers and outsourcing, the effect here is phenomenal. Unfortunately I do not mean this in a good way.
I am fully aware this “outsourcing” is a global matter, but in Bermuda it is clearly a matter of grave conflict. I’m not suggesting get rid of the less expensive employee, or foreign workers, but (The Immigration Department) must be responsible for the processing of foreign labour in a more conservative manner. Everywhere we look, the server, the driver, the cashier, landscaper/construction worker, is a non-Bermudian working seven days a week, and you can bet that a good portion of them are working their legal jobs during the week hours, and doing side hustles after hours, and on weekends.
We often hear of the civil servants, and their significant non work ethics.
I hereby suggest that we make an effort to efficiently utilise these civil servants; specifically those within the Immigration department; to police places of employment, to check for unethical and/or illegal employees.
We MUST do random checking whether on the construction site, in restaurants, supermarkets and the office buildings. Far too many Bermudian’s are being displaced, and held hostage on this tiny very expensive Island we call home.
I can only hope someone is paying attention and acts immediately on this before even more and more Bermudians are unemployed?
