Dear Sir,

On behalf of the organisations which collaborated on the Celebration to the Life of Nelson Mandela on December 15th, we wish to thank all who made it a success.

This includes Canon Thomas Nisbett and Rev. Calvin Stone for prayers offered; as well as the multiple roles of Gene Steede. Our appreciation extends to the In Motion Dancers and the Bermuda African Dance Troupe.

We must also express thanks to Tony Robinson, Tony Brannon, Desta Zion Caisey, The Three Kings and John Wooldridge, all who contributed musically to the Celebration. Cedarbridge student Justin Smith is thanked for his original tune celebrating the late-Madiba.

Students also contributed through spoken word, and they added a special dimension to the Celebration. They included from BHS; Zoe Oleksak, Megan Sutcliff and Carolyn Soares. Cedarbridge students Destiny Mallory and Terrence Webb Jr presented poems written by Mandela’s grandchildren. Saltus’ X’achela Robinson and Ciara Burrows concluded the student contribution to the event. All these young people were exemplary.

We appreciated the presentations by the Premier of Bermuda — the Hon. Craig Cannonier, the Opposition Representative — Mr. Dennis Lister JP MP. Ms Arlene Brock added a perspective of a former anti-apartheid activist.

We must also offer thanks to the media for their support in getting the word out in the short turnaround time involved. We also thank the XL Group for their contribution to the staging this historic Celebration.

In closing, let me note that the entire event was special for those 200 or so at City Hall. However, none of the presentations was more inspiring, than the contribution of 10 year-old X’achela of Saltus, the youngest participant. Her excitement at being involved was palpable as she reminded us that Mandela’s passing is an opportunity to ‘be a better person’ and take positive action.
