A very bad idea

March 20, 2014

Dear Sir:

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Bermuda. We enjoyed another brief trip this week, learning, while there, that you are considering whether to introduce rental cars to the Island. Might we venture to suggest this is a bad idea? We Americans manage the left-hand poorly and drive with more haste than sense. If you put us behind the wheel, the verges of your narrow lanes will be much-painted by car doors. The scooters are a sensible and delightful solution. Besides, no visitor should miss the taxi ride from the airport. In our experience, every driver is a political scientist. The drive to the hotel is always a seminar. We emerge at the hotel steeped in law, politics, and economics, and make straight for the bar.
