Staggering figures

Dear Sir,

How does the Bermuda Industrial Union have the audacity to increase their weekly dues from $12 to $14. per week (a $2 increase)? With a membership of 3,800, I calculate (at $12 a week) their gross income to $45,600 per week. With increased dues to $14, their gross income will be $53,200 per week. I find these figures staggering.

I wish my gross income was as high; indeed, I doubt there are many businesses in Bermuda today that can boast such figures. With so many people out of work and really struggling to make ends meet, it is a joke that the very group that represents labour can be so greedy.

If the BIU did good work for their members, perhaps there could be some justification for the collection of such high dues but, instead of doing everything they possibly can to get their members back to work, it appears they are trying hard to dissuade potential investors from investing in Bermuda.

When will the BIU membership wake up to the fact that Bermuda needs outside investors, in order to produce jobs?

These continual organised “marches” do nothing to help our economy get back on track. Bermuda needs outside investment and these “marches” only put people off from ever coming here to invest.

Plenty of jobs will only return to Bermuda when outside investment feels comfortable putting their money here.
