Seniors’ bus link ‘worth its weight in gold’

Vital lifeline: Project Action, along with volunteer bus driver Ernest “Shuby” DeGrilla, has been assisting our seniors for many years (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

I’m writing your column once more, regarding the Lifestyle article from yesterday’s Royal Gazette (December 30, 2015) concerning Project Action. There were concerns at raising money to purchase two new special needs buses for helping with our seniors and the physically challenged.

Project Action has been assisting our seniors, along with Ernest “Shuby” DeGrilla, a volunteer bus driver, for years, taking them to various places such as doctors’ visits, hospital visits for dialysis appointments, dental, etc.

This bus service provides a vital link for many of our seniors to get around and gives them a sense of self-worth.

I’m hoping the people that head up the End to End committee for 2016 might consider Project Action as one of the charities chosen each year to receive a cheque from the proceeds collected from the 2016 walk and related events; I’m certain they would be more than appreciative if this could become a reality.

Many a Sunday I pick up a lady from Westmeath Nursing Home to take her to church. While driving, she would mention how much the residents at Westmeath appreciate Project Action and the bus services they provide, especially “Shuby” — he’s so accommodating, taking us everywhere, even grocery shopping.

Anyway, I know there are many charities across Bermuda that need extra funds as well. The End to End each year has provided the charities chosen for that year a much-needed boost.

I deem Project Action and its bus service to be worth their weight in gold. Please consider them.
