Seeking a more humane way to cull chickens

Feral chickens

Dear Sir,

I am concerned about whether chickens are being culled in a humane manner.

Recently I came across two of six poisoned chickens. I don’t know how long it takes them to die, but one was gasping her last and the other was trying to raise her head, so I took them to my vet, who mercifully dispatched them.

The man who had this bleak task works for the Department of Conservation. He was looking for the other four bodies.

“Sometimes they survive and I have to do it again,” he said.

I know that chickens are considered pests in Bermuda, but there must be a more humane way to destroy them so they don’t suffer so much.

Not only can they not speak; they can’t even cry.
