Disallowing status downright unfair

The issue of Bermuda Status frequently makes headlines. In this file photo, Premier Michael Dunkley is presented with a document after a marcgh to protest Government's handling of the extension of Bermuda Status to more than 1,400 Permanent Resident Certificate holders through a loophole in the Immigration law

Dear Sir,

Getting any recipe exactly right requires having the correct ingredients with which to begin and then the proper mixing of same.

Consider this: Bermuda’s population has the correct ‘people’’ ingredients — that being a population mixture from the Caribbean, Portugal, the Philippines, Canada, US, etc. beside the many Bermudian status holders.

Now to have this Island’s recipe of people mixture have a successful recipe outcome, consider the following — every group is an ingredient that contributes to Bermuda’s good fortune and good taste. Now is the time to get the Bermuda recipe’s formula combination right. Call this recipe ‘status’.

The disrespect shown by the PLP and others disallowing status to contributing inhabitants in this country is confounding beside being downright unfair.

Consider this: most seeking status are already employed. After all, those working couldn’t have remained here with no income! They had to be employed. Consequently, their contributions to the workforce are enormous! Especially in areas where Bermudians care not to be employed at all.

Then there are also people who have lived here for 30 or more years who are not and never have been employed. For example, check out many families’ donated ingredients that have surely made the Bermuda recipe better and would continue to improve it if status were awarded to them.

For instance, my husband and I have been here for more than 37 years, never employed. There are many other “outsiders”, as we are, living here who too make up part of the population’s recipe.

So many of us have made enormous financial contributions over the years to the economy.

Consider this: if for instance the “Tuckers Town” population (nearly always disdainfully described by some as the ‘wealthy’ ingredient) finally tire of being part of the discrimination process regarding status. Discussion has been to consider what would happen to Bermuda if most just up and moved out from the Island.

That desertion would indeed bankrupt the Bermuda recipe and probably result in a near if not total collapse.

Who would buy and occupy those many homes, support the many businesses needed to run a household, make contributions to the organisations that help the needy, etc., etc.?

It is time for the sniping to end against status for those entitled and permit it!!

Time too for the constant sniping of the PLP’S accusatory stance against the current, elected OBA government. The PLP years in office were, after all, anything but exemplary.

This Bermuda Recipe’s conclusion — rid all concocted and unfair status ingredients impossible to digest. Make Bermuda a feast for all Bermuda residents.
