My airport project recommendations
Dear Sir,
Allow me to present my opinion on the current government’s attempt to design and build a new airport utilising a public-private programme, which will receive all earnings from said airport for at least 35 years. This will have a significant minus impact on Bermuda’s earnings, resulting in significant additional debt.
In addition to the above, it is hard to believe that the proposed project can be completed at 50 per cent of the cost presented in the 2008 Master Plan.
There is concern regarding the flooding expected during a significant storm. I have proposed in the past that a breakwater be constructed on the Castle Harbour side of the Causeway and along the shoreline where the airport is exposed to storm surge from the Castle Harbour.
I also recommend that serious consideration be given to a comprehensive programme of repair and/or replacement of mechanical and architectural features. Upon completion, a schedule can be produced that will outline when certain work can be performed with proper consideration, given that the work being performed is in an active facility.
The above stated strategy will accomplish many advantages for Bermuda:
• All planning and design can be accomplished by Bermuda organisations
• All construction will be scheduled and performed by Bermudians
• Airport revenue can be used to satisfy the obligations of the country
It is my hope that the above will create additional thought and alternative action by the Government to satisfy the airport situation.
Sincerely,
` CHARLES W NEARON
