Lest we forget? Ahem, you forgot!
Dear Sir,
On reading today’s Royal Gazette (May 8, 2020), I was disappointed, to say the least, that I could not find any mention of the significance of today’s date.
When so many Bermudians and millions of people gave their lives to fight the Nazi “pandemic”, we do not remember the ending of the Second World War, on May 8, 1945?
It was a day of great celebration in Britain and many other countries, and is today remembered in a somewhat scaled-down way because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is interesting to note that Berlin, Germany, has declared May 8 as a public holiday, recognising the cutting of the shackles to the Nazi regime, and a rebirth of democracy.
Let us not forget VE-Day. Lord alone knows what life would have been like had the Nazis won the war!
To all those who fought for our liberation, may they rest in peace — and I also include all who have lost their lives in the present crisis.
Fortunately, there are many of us who have not forgotten our past, but it is also up to us to remind those whose memories are not as long.
ANTONY SIESE
