Volunteers could help Fire Service in its hour of need

Put through their paces: Bermuda Fire Service recruits are shown during training at BFS headquarters in this file photograph (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Having been a volunteer fireman 55 years ago, I wonder why the Fire Service, which is having staffing problems, cannot get volunteers to assist. Training would be necessary and it would not happen overnight to get such volunteers operational.

We have to start somewhere. It was functional from about 1850 and only in the past 30 to 40 years has it become a fully paid service. Volunteers have and continue to be an important part of Bermudian society.
