BTA’s CEO search a dizzying reality

The post of BTA chief executive has been left vacant since Charles Jeffers II left under mysterious circumstances in June 2022 after 14 months in the post (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Yet again, the Bermuda Tourism Authority is looking for another chief executive. Further, the comment was made in yesterday’s Royal Gazette (February 1, 2023) that the BTA is looking for an agency to assist with its quest to improve tourism. I thought that is what the BTA was supposed to be doing!

Today’s story explains that “the authority has seen a revolving door of CEOs recently”. This revolving door is making us dizzy! Isn’t it time to try letting the private sector run it? Goodness knows the Bermuda Government has enough to do with trying to get us out of debt and many other pressing problems.

Some will remember the days of Colin Selley and others at the tourism helm. No doubt, we will never see tourism reach the success of the Colin Selley days. Isn’t it worth a try to run tourism like a business?

I believe the “shareholders” of the business — the Bermuda public, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, etc — could all be the recipients of a handsome dividend: an efficiently run tourism business.
