Banner craze is simply crazy

The area around Tee Street is already bad enough for road users without attention-seeking banner advertising (Photograph by Owain Johnston-Barnes)

Dear Sir,

I think you would agree that this is a “banner” year for banners. Call them posters, banners, signs — whatever you wish. They are everywhere!

At last count, I saw six on the wall at the Paget traffic lights. They are also “decorating” the wall on Middle Road at the top of Tee Street — one of our “frequent accident spots”. No doubt they are in many parts of the island.

The number of times the wall on the left-hand side by the Tee Street turn-off to Middle Road has been damaged tells me that drivers are looking at the banners and not the traffic.

I have e-mailed the address provided by the Government for questions from the public. The first e-mail was probably two months ago and another more recently. To date, no answer. (Are you surprised?) Why bother to give out an e-mail address if it works only one way — incoming.

David Lopes has asked the question many, many times on his morning radio show: what is the law with respect to banners? Does no one know or are they not interested in answering queries from the voting public?

It would make sense to advertise the upcoming events on the banners on social media, The Royal Gazette, and the radio and television stations. They can all use the advertising dollars.

This would eliminate the danger of drivers reading the banners instead of paying attention to traffic. (Right now the advertising rates at Bermuda Broadcasting Company are extremely attractive.)

Bermuda has always prided itself on the lack of unsightly billboards such as you see overseas. Let's get back to where we were.
