I need not mention anything more about the very disappointing behaviour of some Cup Match players. Hopefully, the matter will be properly and sternly dealt with to prevent future indiscretions. We look forward to much improvement in future Annual Classics.

However, I feel the need to comment on something I felt was glaringly wrong after the two days’ play — perhaps not even noticed by many.

At the presentation of the cup to Somerset to be returned to the West End, His Excellency the Governor, Andrew Murdoch, spoke. He was followed by the presidents of both St George’s and Somerset cricket clubs. Finally, the captains of both teams were called up to deliver their speeches.

Neither of the captains seemed to acknowledge the Governor, let alone shake his hand.

Where was the etiquette, decorum and basic good manners?

We can do better than this.
