Think ahead and bury power lines

Trenching takes place on Middle Road in Southampton (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

I must address Jeffrey Steynor’s letter concerning putting electrical wires underground.

He defeated his own argument by saying that most outages were caused by branches touching overhanging wires. If all wires were underground, you would not have this problem.

Furthermore, he said that years ago it would cost $200 million to put all wires underground, today about $400 million.

Well, start today, $10 million a year and when his children are ready for retirement, he won’t have this problem. Think forward, think ahead, invest for the future.

I remember Alf Oughton told me in 1987 that putting power lines underground was too expensive. If he had spent $10 million a year back then, we would not have this problem now.

Then Belco goes out and buys AirCare for millions of dollars and borrows the money to do so. Get your priorities right.

PS: Remember, many wealthy communities on this island are underground with their electricity. I wonder why.
