As we celebrate Jesus's resurrection this Easter, residents are encouraged to reflect on Jesus Christ 2033 (JC 2033), a global movement uniting Christians marking 2,000 years since Jesus's ministry, death, and resurrection in Jerusalem.

JC2033 is a vision of pastor Olivier, a pioneer of Alpha courses in the French-speaking world. He initiated JC2033 in 1999, and in 2007, he received “divine visitation” in Australia, inspiring him to promote this illuminating project.

Intuitively called the “Decade of the Resurrection (2023-33),” the project has missions in 68 countries proclaiming that “Jesus is Risen” among Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Pentecostal and Evangelical churches, as well as the World Council of Churches.

JC2033 has five foundational pillars that define its identity, which are well defined, memorable and adaptable to diverse cultures.

The first pillar is prayer, the second is love shown through social and compassionate actions. The third pillar is unity, emphasising collaboration among diverse Christian traditions united by Christ.

While researching “Jesus Christ 2033”, I found the Reverend Richard Buck (1582-1624) relevant as he was the chaplain on the 1609 Sea Venture and likely led the first Easter service in St George’s parish on March 25, 1610, for shipwreck survivors during their ten-month stay.

Since then, island churches have been officiating Easter liturgies for more than 400 years. Moreover, in the coming seven years, churches will participate in global movements leading up to the JC2033 celebrations.
