Use old nurses’ residence site for care of seniors

King Edward VII Memorial Hospital before construction of the acute care centre. The old nurses’ residence is at the centre rear of the photograph (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

There has been a problem for many years with seniors staying in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital instead of returning to their homes or going into a care facility.

The Government ill-advisedly demolished the nurses’ home right alongside the hospital. The cost of converting it to a seniors care home would have been minimal compared with what is now required. That area does not produce any income for the taxpayer and is another wonderful free parking lot for hospital employees. There were two parking lots, one north of Berry Hill Road and the brand-new one in the corner of Point Finger Road and Berry Hill Road.

Had that facility been utilised, the seniors in such a care home would have been very close to medical care should it be required, cutting down on ambulance costs and travel time.

Maybe a care home should be built where the old nurses’ home existed, with a parking lot for visiting relatives who can pay a parking fee. Either that or have dear old grandma or grandpa living with the children or grandchildren.

ANTONY SIESE
