Booth: Customer focus can bring retail success

Retailers have endured a tough start to 2011, but one entrepreneur has proved that having the right business model can be a recipe for success even in the current economic climate.Darren Booth, owner of The Booth, which opened its second store in Washington Mall III in July last year, has launched a new line of skateboard and surfwear called West including everything from men’s and women’s wear to men’s shoes and ear phones.Mr Booth said that by focusing on what the customer wants and selling niche brands such as West at a reasonable price had enabled his company to hit its target market.“I try to look for lines from small companies that are a little bit different,” he said.“They are for people that used to be into skateboarding when they were younger but are now a little bit older and more refined.“As long as your product is okay and your price is fine then people will shop with you I have found.”Since relocating its luggage products to the new premises and a new range of boys’ fashions and an expanded line of women’s clothing - all of which are not readily available in Bermuda - to the larger retail space, Mr Booth said that business had been steady and despite a quiet March, he hoped that a change in weather would help sales to pick up.“It’s hard work but that’s why they call it business,” he said. “You put the work in and you get it back in return.”Having set up The Booth three years ago, Mr Booth is now seeing a return on his investment and he said that the opening of new businesses in the mall had helped to boost trade as shoppers became aware of what was on offer.
