Sisters' store is a big hit with fans of retro fashion

Retro cool: Owner Mesheiah Crockwell and sales associate Jamillah Weeks of BSquared Vintage

Two sisters who went into the fashion industry together five years ago have opened their own boutique selling vintage clothes and apparel.Mesheiah Crockwell and Sheena Bassett, owners of BSquared Vintage, who started out as a mobile business hosting ladies nights and private parties for groups, as well as seasonal shows at the hotels, jumped at the chance to move into their own space when the premises at 180 Middle Road in Southampton became available. The pair focus on vintage pieces of clothing, jewellery and hand bags from the 1960s, 70s and 80s in the retro, hip and Mod styles.“We found our line of vintage products works well for the Bermudian clientele,” said Ms Crockwell. “Every piece is unique so you won’t see anyone else wearing the same.”The sisters, who had always wanted to go into business together and shared a love of vintage fashion, and decided it would be the ideal niche to be in. They have been busy hand-picking their products from the US to as far afield as the UK and Europe and building up the business ever since.Ms Crockwell, who works in accountancy and human resources, and Ms Bassett, who is in marketing, said that their skill sets, personalities, tastes and styles complemented each other perfectly.“We can both like the same or similar pieces but wear and accessorise them in different ways,” she said. “She is more avant garde and I am more classic, but we are always creative and unique in our approach which I believe helps our clientele in getting what they want.”And opening a new boutique in the current economy held no fear for Ms Crockwell, who said that“The economy right now has its challenges, but like anything else you have to put in the work and the only way it is going to grow is if we as Bermudians have faith and help the economy to grow,” she said.“With proper planning and management and business savvy anything is possible.”The sisters also offer a consignment service for people who want to move on their vintage pieces, while the new space, which comes complete with changing rooms, provides a perfect location for private parties, baby showers and wedding shows. There is also on-site parking and overflow spaces available at the church next door.“The feedback has been great we have had nothing but positive comments,” said Ms Crockwell.“I am from Somerset so feel comfortable being here in the West and like the idea of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city.”The boutique is open from Monday to Saturday between 11am and 8pm and on Sunday from 1pm to 6pm.For more information contact 232-0562 or 705-3482, e-mail bsquaredvintage[AT]yahoo.com or visit BSquared Vintage on Facebook.
