Consumers looking to make their dollars stretch further in these difficult times will get some help in finding group discount opportunities from a new website. The Bermydeals.bm website launched last week. The site negotiates discounts with businesses and e-mails them to registered users and via the Facebook and Twitter online social networks. The deals are activated only when a minimum number of people agree to buy, which it is hoped will encourage subscribers to share the promotion with family and friends. The Bermydeals site already features deals from restaurants, spas, museums, local events and festivals, bars, home and automotive services, and various outdoor recreational activities such as boat and kayak rentals. The website launched by offering $50 worth of food for $30 in any of the three restaurants situated at The Reefs hotel in Southampton.Upcoming deals include 50 percent off jewellery cleaning at Sovereign Jewellers, 50 percent off golf lessons with Darron Swan, and 50 percent off admission to the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.“Our deals give consumers a great excuse to try new businesses on the Island,” said Rachel Sawden, head of Business Development with Bermydeals.bm. “In turn, merchants gain access to new clients and can measure the return on investment on their promotion. Everyone wins.”Nagma Walker, general manager of The Reefs, said: “The Reefs just launched new lunch and dinner menus at our three restaurants. Bermydeals provides a way for us to reach residents, and encourage them to stop by to try the new dishes.”A statement from Bermydeals said there were no upfront costs for businesses looking to offer group discounts through the site.“We work hard to ensure the deals reach the minimum number of customers so vendors are guaranteed customers,” the company stated. “In the unlikely circumstance that the minimum number is not reached the vendor has simply received free advertising.”Diane Gordon, executive director of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, gave her backing to the new site.“We support the young, local, entrepreneurial spirit, which Ms Sawden clearly exudes and welcome the introduction of any innovative initiative whose aim is to help encourage the community to shop local and keep Bermudians employed,” Ms Gordon said.
