Makin’ Waves will close the doors at its Front Street store for the last time tomorrow at 5.30pm after almost 25 years at the same location. But the popular clothing and fashion store will reopen next Spring at its new premises in town the current Bermuda Gas showroom in Church Street. The retailer, which is run by Stuart Joblin and Doug Patterson, was advised by its landlord Freisenbruch Meyer almost two years ago that they would not be renewing the store’s lease as it was seeking permission from the Planning Department to change the space from traditional retail use to retail insurance, breaking the mould of most ground level shop fronts on Front Street.Re-zoning approval was granted on appeal after initially being rejected by Planning and Makin’ Waves started the exhaustive search for a new home.Despite there being a surplus of available office space, a suitable retail space was hard to find, but the retailer’s search ended this summer when it secured a place in the Boyle Building on the corner of Queen and Church Streets.Makin’ Waves will take over the new lease on the space at the start of next year and plans to be open in late March, 2012.The outlet’s other location on Camber Road in Dockyard will remain open seven days a week and customers will be encouraged to visit the West End store during the winter months. The company has also said it remains committed to its full-time employees and has assured all of them that despite the closure made necessary by the move, there will be no loss of jobs or lay-offs. All will remain employed and will work out of the Dockyard location in the meanwhile.“Makin’ Waves would like to thank all of their customers for their loyalty over the years, and their kind words of encouragement and support during this time of transition, and are looking forward to serving both the locals and visitors at their new location on Church Street in the spring of 2012,” said Mr Patterson.
