Court Street open for business tonight at traders’ request

In an 11th hour bid to bring in shoppers, the North East Hamilton EEZ has asked the City of Hamilton not to close off Court Street to traffic tonight.Court Street retailers, who’ve been seeing sluggish sales compared to the rest of Hamilton, feel they may get more foot traffic if people are allowed to drive through and park.“After consultation with Court Street merchants and the team at the Economic Empowerment Zones, the City of Hamilton will ensure the entire length of Court Street will remain open (tonight) for late night shopping,” said chief operating officer and secretary to the City of Hamilton, Edward Benevides.“This move was at the request of merchants on the street who felt that the road closure hampered shoppers from accessing their businesses.”The EEZ is also pushing the winter EEZy money programme to encourage shopping.Customers who purchase goods though today at participating retailers in the EEZ will be able to redeem discount coupons between January and February 29.You can earn EEZy money valued at five to 30 percent savings the next time you shop in the EEZ counts to the entire Community during the post Holiday Season which is typically January and February. The programme’s part of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation and Bermuda Chamber of Commerce’s “Shop Local” campaign.EEZ businesses have been offering late night shopping, food tastings, fashion shows, and entertainment during the holiday shopping period.
