When Somers Supermart said Leon Dickinson had to retire, the 65-year-old didn’t go home and take it easy. The grocery store’s former assistant manager became their competition.Mr Dickinson and his wife Evannie held the grand opening yesterday for East End Variety in St. George’s.Located on Duke of York Street, right by the bus stop, the convenience store plans to serve the local community.Mrs Dickinson said the store is open from 7am to 10pm every day, except Sunday when it’s open 8am to 8pm.It sells everything from dairy and produce, such as bananas and potatoes, to toiletries and baked goods. There are no plans to sell liquor. She said what sets East End Variety apart from its competitors Somers Supermart down the road and Cousins Variety to the west, was “excellent service and good prices”.“We love people and we are here to serve them,” Mrs Dickinson said, adding business has been great so far. She said she felt there was enough business to be shared by all three stores.Mr Dickinson has worked in the retail and grocery business for more than 30 years, she said. Before he worked for Somers Supermart he was a manager at Hayward’s in Warwick.Right now it is just she and her husband who are running the store, but they expect to soon hire part-time staff. As an added convenience East End Variety offers a Bermuda CableVision bill payment service.
