Direct from Bangkok, Thailand to Bermuda, entrepreneur Rachel Sawden is bringing a range of jewellery and gift items to the local marketplace through her mobile shop, Wanderlust Boutique.Combining two of her passions, shopping and travelling, Ms Sawden created her company in late 2010 and named it after her favourite word: wanderlust, an irresistible desire to travel. The mobile boutique doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar location but instead offers private showings and one-off shopping nights for customers to browse jewellery, flower soap carvings, silk ties, scarves and T-shirts.In 2010, Ms Sawden spent almost seven months backpacking through India, Thailand, Vietnam as well as Australia and Western Europe trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her professional life.“When travelling, I like to interact with new cultures by going to their markets,” said Ms Sawden, who also heads up the social media company BermyDeals. When she came home to Bermuda, she knew she would one day return to Thailand, back to what some describe as the gem and jewel hub of the world. By October of that same year, she had booked a ticket to Bangkok, this time with her mother in tow.She came home with a handpicked selection of colourful rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings as well as hand-carved, hand-painted soaps in remarkable shapes of intricate flowers.“I like to hand pick everything myself so I can give people an idea of where the items come from,” she said.Ms Sawden held her first shopping night in December 2010, which went really well though she said it was just a test. “I wanted to see what people responded to,” she said.Between then and now Ms Sawden put Wanderlust on the “back burner” as she focused on BermyDeals, a popular deal-of-the-day website offering discounts for local companies. However, this past February Ms Sawden returned to Bangkok for the biannual gems and jewellery trade show, which features more than 1,200 vendors.“It was overwhelming,” she said. “It was the biggest room I’ve ever seen. It took me two days just to get through the silver section.”Most of her items are priced moderately between $15 and $60.Ms Sawden is holding her second shopping night, tonight from 5pm to 9pm, at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, along with local designers René Hill and Ashley Aiken.“Even if you aren’t coming to buy, it’s a cool shake-up to the happy hour scene,” she said, adding that the timing is perfect to pick up a gift item for Mother’s Day.Ms Sawden’s plans for the company are to build gradually, focusing in on items that work best for the Bermuda market. She is also looking to start wholesaling the hand-carved soaps as well as going on buying trips to other parts of the world, including Turkey and Peru. For more information, call 533-3779 or visit www.wanderlust-boutique.com.
