Who says local retailers aren’t embracing internet shopping? One local furniture shop, Bermuda Savings Zone, is no stranger to virtual shopping as they have had an online presence since they opened ten years ago. Today, more than 70 percent of their business is handled online.Big Savings Zone in St David’s boasts 4,000 square feet of showroom featuring home furniture, accessories, decorative wall art and accent pieces, but their website receives the majority of their ‘foot’ traffic. In celebration of their 10th year in business, store manager Ben Wilson has been working to upgrade their website for the last five months, developing a more user-friendly design and adding a zoom feature so customers can take a closer look at the texture and detail of a product. He has also increased the number of products featured on the site, www.bigsavingszone.com, from 2,000 to 4,000, adding more items daily.According to Mr Wilson, the prices on their website is the price people will pay, inclusive of shipping and duty.“There is no guessing game with our website. The price listed is the landed cost in Bermuda,” he said, adding that many websites give an estimate at the arrival costs leaving the customer without a confirmed price until the item arrives.Customers can then place their order online and a sales person will call to obtain their credit card information over the phone.“We’re constantly in touch every step of the way from the time the order is placed,” he said, adding that his all-Bermudian staff of six make it a very personal shopping experience for customers. “It allows the customer to chose exactly what they want and we handle the rest from start to finish.”Customers can also take the store up on their “quick ship programme” that will get special orders to Bermuda in three to four weeks. This year Big Savings Zone is adding new suppliers to their existing Ashley Furniture line, including Décor-Rest and El Ran, leading Canadian leather manufacturers and in-motion furniture distributors, respectively. The store has also recently hired Bermudian Robert Vosper, a bedding specialist in the home goods industry for more than 35 years. The store also features three 42-inch, in-store computer monitors that act as a small internet cafe where customers can browse special order pieces with the help of a sales person.Though the store is outside the traditional retail sector of Hamilton, one might think that the struggling economy might hit them harder than most. But that is not the case, says Mr Wilson, who says their location has worked to their benefit.“We’re keeping our heads above water. More and more people are finding out about us. And, because we are outside of Hamilton we have less overhead so, therefore, we can pass those savings onto our customers,” he said. “A little drive could save people a lot of money.”The store is open from 9am to 7pm Monday through Saturday.
