Christmas in July coming for online shoppers

Double dose: Organisers and local e-tailers announce there will be two eMondays for Bermuda shoppers in 2012

When you hear the term ‘Cyber Monday’ or ‘eMonday’, you probably think Christmas. Call it Christmas in July then, because there will be a summer eMonday next month with Bermuda e-tailers will be offering special savings for online shoppers. The Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC), and the Department of E-Commerce sponsored its second annual Bermuda version of the popular US Cyber Monday online shopping day last December, which offered deep discounts to online deal lovers. The event was so successful that they’ve decided to host two eMondays this year — the first on July 23, just before Cup Match and another on November 26 — in the lead-up to Christmas.Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Patrice Minors today encouraged Bermuda e-tailers to sign-up and participate in this year’s eMonday events.“We encourage all e-tailers to sign up to participate in both e-Mondays as it has proven to be a great way to promote eBusiness in Bermuda. We recognise the importance of developing and encouraging commerce in any form,” Ms Minors said. “We are encouraging Bermudians to think outside of the box. Business is no longer done as usual. And online business is now a viable option for many who would be entrepreneurs in Bermuda.”The Department of E-Commerce, which is a part of the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism, is also encouraging e-tailers to take advantage of a number of workshops it is offering to encourage entrepreneurs and e-tailers to learn how to set up their own eCommerce business.“The most important attribute of any business today is the efficient use of technology and what better way to showcase just how prevalent our technology skills in Bermuda are along with our entrepreneurial skills than to set up an e-business online,” said Nancy Volesky, Director of E-Commerce.“Whether your eBusiness is a part-time or a full-time endeavour, these workshops will give you the ideas, tools and contacts to start and grow your business,” said Minister of Business Development and Tourism, Wayne Furbert. “Remember that with an e-business, your market potential can be global.”eMonday organisers say locals may be surprised to know there are a lot of local e-tailers with an increased variety of goods for sale online locally. They hope that with events like eMonday, local businesses can attract locals to their stores and away from international retailers by finding ways to give them what they want.“The goal of eMonday is to shop locally but also to be rewarded for doing so,” said Ms Volesky. “During the eMonday events, the e-tailers will be offering discounts either through coupons, percentages off or bonus gifts.”To see a list of participating e-tailers, or to sign up to participate in eMonday or eCommerce workshops, go to eMonday.bm.
