Fans of all things bling will want to check out a unique collection that’s on display in Crisson’s flagship Front Street store this weekend.Crisson’s, along with HSBC and Gosling’s last night hosted the world premiere of Italian jeweller Roberto Coin’s latest Animalier Collection. About 100 HSBC Premier customers got a sneak-peak at the collection, which is inspired by the spirit and energy of the wild kingdom.Mr Coin began his career creating jewellery for principal designers like Tiffany’s and Cartier before venturing on his own. Every piece in Roberto Coin collections feature a hidden ruby set within the gold so that it touches the wearer’s skin. The unique detail is based upon an ancient Egyptian legend that says a ruby lying upon the skin of a woman brings great happiness and good fortune.Using mostly diamonds, gold, silver and enamel, with occasional appearances of other precious materials like onyx and tiger’s eye, the collection is full of vibrancy, sparkle and originality.Peter Webster, Roberto Coin’s business partner and co-founder of the brand, says this is a first — that the company has never before launched a collection on the road.“We launch about ten new collections every year and at the Baselworld Jewellery Show in March, but we’ve never actually launched it on the road — Bermuda is the place. It’s the first,” Mr Webster said. “We’re actually in 52 countries now and because of our relationship with Crisson’s, we thought this would be a perfect place to start.”After the premier in Bermuda, the collection will go on the road first to the US, then around the world.“We have about 40 trips planned in the States, but not for another month, so this is the world premiere,” Mr Webster said.Peter Crisson says the idea to hold such an event in Bermuda has an interesting backstory.“When this Crisson location first opened in 1991, I was standing by the cash desk one day when a gentleman walked up to me and said, ‘I’m Roberto Coin, I’m from Italy and I own a jewellery company and I’d be interested in doing business with you’. And I said, ‘Well that’s very interesting’. I didn’t have a clue who the gentleman was,” Mr Crisson said.“I told him, why don’t you give me your card because we do some business in Italy and when we’re there, we’ll certainly stop in and see you. And we did. And basically, the rest is history.”Mr Crisson said the relationship has evolved over the last 20 years but that it’s been very successful.“Our original order was for $35,000 and this weekend, we’re showing nearly a million and a half of merchandise, so that’s quite an evolution,” Mr Crisson said. One of the interesting things was why Mr Coin was in Bermuda in the first place.“He lived briefly in the Channel Islands and while he was there, there was apparently an executive who was Bermudian who worked for the Bank of Bermuda — the predecessor to HSBC. This Bermudian fellow was so adamant about what an extraordinary place Bermuda was that it was always on Mr Coin’s shortlist of places to go and he finally managed to get here in 1991,” Mr Crisson said.“I’m absolutely delighted he walked into our business — it is a personal connection.”As the sponsor and organiser of last night’s premier gala event, HSBC Premier Executive said it’s a unique experience they can offer their clients.“Our HSBC Premier clients are our most affluent customers,” said Blake Hellam, head of retail banking wealth management for HSBC. “If you’ve got a customer who has say, a million dollars in assets, those are individuals who travel, who look around the world for their next jewellery piece, and who want to go to stores that offer unique pieces or experiences.“So from an HSBC perspective, we’re always looking for those unique experiences for our customers because that’s what the customers want.”“It is a special event for us because it’s the first time we’ve been chosen for the launch of from any major brand and we’d really like to thank Roberto Coin and HSBC for this faith in us and this commitment to Bermuda,” Mr Crisson said.Even if you’re not an HSBC Premier customer, you can still have access to the collection. Roberto Coin’s Animalier Collection will be on display from 9-5 today and tomorrow at Crisson’s store at 55 Front Street.“We certainly welcome the public to come and look at this,” Mr Crisson said. “It will be out, on display and very much for sale.”Anyone can purchase a piece of the collection, but there’s one item that you won’t be able to buy after this weekend — that’s the Roberto Coin Dragon Bangle. Made with diamonds, rubies and 18-carat gold in honour of the 2012 Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dragon, the bracelet retails for $45,000.“It’s a limited edition,” Mr Webster said. “There are only ten in the world and there are just two left — this is one of them.”
