Be your own boss: new workshop this weekend

If you’ve ever wanted to be your own boss and start your own business, there’s a new workshop this weekend that can help you learn how — and it’s free.The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) has partnered with Bermuda’s Emerging Professionals (BEPRO) to offer the workshop that will provide prospective entrepreneurs an overview of what is required to build a successful business.The seminar, which is this Saturday, September 22, will focus on three major topics:— Stress testing a business idea and exploring whether or not your idea for a business can actually work.— Developing a pitch. Learning how to develop each of the components of a business plan and focusing on cost and building a sound business model.— Marketing a business and partnering for success. How to gain customers and establish a network and support team.The workshop will be hosted by Jamillah Lodge, business development officer for the BEDC. She will moderate a panel of successful young entrepreneurs including Patrice Morgan, editor and chief of Showoff and Teen Showoff magazines and David Zuill, co-owner of Davidrose JewelryShowoff is an entertainment magazine geared specifically towards Bermuda’s young people. Ms Morgan, who initially studied business at Clark University switched to fashion design and merchandising after two years. Having spent a semester in France, she was surprised to learn the Parisians weren’t as fashion focused as she assumed. When she completed her studies and returned home, Ms Morgan developed the idea for the magazine while working as a substitute teacher.Davidrose, a conscious luxury jewellery boutique, offers its clients handcrafted bridal and statement pieces. Conceptualised in 2009 the company has been designing bridal and statement pieces for clients for the past four years.The panel will provide attendees with real life examples and feedback about starting a small business.The workshop will be held at the Chamber of Commerce, on Front Street (Albouys Point) from 10:30am until 12:30pm.
