Retailers call for suspension of term limits

Fast-moving measures needed: Paula Clarke, CEO of Gibbons Co and the Chamber’s retail division chair.

The retail sector yesterday called on the new OBA Government to suspend work permit term limits as one of a number of “fast-moving measures” to create business confidence in Bermuda. The struggling retail sector said it also hoped that tax breaks given to it by the PLP Government would stay in place.Chamber of Commerce retail divisional chair Paula Clarke told The Royal Gazette: “We hope that the OBA will recognise the importance a healthy retail environment as part of a well-rounded Bermuda package to attract international business and tourism and will continue to offer the industry much needed tax relief until we round the corner in our recovery.“The biggest impact would be a more business friendly Bermuda.“What we are looking for in the OBA are fast-moving measures that will create confidence in the international business arena to sustain existing business and attract new opportunities to Bermuda.”Ms Clarke added: “Something like a term limit suspension for a period would be a positive move to attract more international business. Retail has suffered greatly as a result of so many people leaving Bermuda and the increase of number of unemployed Bermudians.”
