Police warn public of fake bank e-mail scam
A new year, a new e-mail scam targeting customers from one of Bermuda’s local banks.
The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit has issued an advisory regarding the fake e-mail, which tries to dupe HSBC customers into giving out their account passcodes for an alleged security update.
The email is entitled “Dear Customer — Account is disable. (Important)” and states: “Dear Members. New Email Alert to Customers. Your Account was disabled for verification and security update. Please note that this account will be closed if not verified now. Thank you for the commitment and standing by us. Happy New Year.”
The Police are urging residents to ignore these unsolicited messages or similar “official looking e-mails” claiming to be from any of the local banks.
An HSBC Bermuda spokesperson stated: “HSBC Bermuda is aware that some of our customers may receive fraudulent e-mails asking them to log on to a fraudulent web site and provide personal financial information. The public should note that phishing e-mails along with other fraudulent e-mails are constantly circulating.
“We would like to advise our customers that any requests received via e-mail to validate personal information should be declined. Under no circumstances would HSBC Bermuda send e-mails requesting customers to confirm or update debit/credit card numbers, account numbers along with their personal log on information.
“Any client who responds to a fraudulent e-mail and provides personal log on information should immediately contact the bank’s Call Centre at 441-299-5959.”
