Jefferis: ‘Always thought end of College Weeks a big mistake’

Party time: Coco Reef Resort is Bermuda's official Spring Break hotel

Spring Break is back on in Bermuda this year, with Coco Reef Resort offering students a bargain rate of $80 a person per night.Lamenting the dying out of the Island’s once famous ‘College Weeks’, Coco Reef owner John Jefferis said he still believes the event is a great marketing opportunity for Bermuda. On the low room rate being offered, he told The Royal Gazette: “We, in the hotel business live in a frighteningly competitive environment. The sad and somewhat destructive act of discounting is prevalent everywhere. Atlantis in the Bahamas continually advertises a rate of $69 on Cable TV. In order to secure College Weeks business the rate has to be competitive. Low rates do provide the possibility to obtain additional Food and Beverage revenue.”Mr Jefferis added: “I have always thought that the termination of College Weeks was a big mistake. I remember twenty five years ago at the weekly Monday night Swizzle Parties at Elbow Beach meeting many honeymooners, people celebrating their Anniversary and other Guests who had first visited Bermuda as college students. College Weeks has always had the significant benefit of being a marketing opportunity.”He said this year his resort was happy to be the Island’s official Spring Break hotel “in order to facilitate the reintroduction of College Weeks last year and the potential to convert college students into future customers”.Hotel and event discounts are being offered for Spring Break this year from February 16 to March 22.Coco Reef in Paget has been designated Bermuda’s “official Spring Break hotel”.The $80 a night rate is per person, based on double occupancy.Students coming for Spring Break will get an exclusive Spring Break Pass, which grants free or discounted entry tickets, transport and restaurant specials.Throughout Spring Break, Bermuda will offer several recurring daytime and nightlife events for all visiting students.Events include beach parties and pool parties, boat cruises, beer-fests and more, all happening during the weeks of February 16-24, March 2-8, March 9-15 and March 16-22, 2013.Highlights include: Party Bus Island Tour; a Wet n Wild Pool Party Glow Party at Cosmopolitan; and Pyjama Pub Crawl. The Department of Tourism has said last year’s Spring Break events attracted around 250 visitors. For more information visit: http://www.gotobermuda.com/springbreak2013/
