Mr Chicken spreads wings, opens new outlet

Fast food favourite Mr Chicken has opened a third location in Devonshire offering centrally based residents a new takeout option.

Owned by Beryl and David Furbert, the new Mr Chicken Express walk-up window opened two weeks ago and word is quickly spreading to loyal customers.

Located on 17 Watlington Road, just East of Lindo’s Market, the new spot will offer Mr Chicken’s full menu, including their signature Mr Chicken Filet and Wahoo nuggets though not pizzas and Phili cheese steaks.

Don’t be fooled by the eatery’s name, however, Mr Chicken serves fish sandwiches, shrimp, swiss and mushroom burgers alongside a full selection of chicken options.

Since the restaurant left Collector’s Hill in 2007 and moved into Hamilton, Mrs Furbert says that people have been asking them to return to the area.

The Furberts live only a street away from the new location, which was vacant for a long spell.

“We used to pass it every day and I thought that would be a good place for a new addition,” she said. “We’re happy to be back in the area and looking forward to serving good food at reasonable prices.”

The takeout window has been fitted with all new equipment and employs five staff, three full-time and two part-time.

Business has been steady since the opening.

“It’s been great. People have really responded well saying that there were looking for something on the East side of Hamilton,” said Mrs Furbert, whose original location in Heron Bay has been open since 1985. “They’ve been really welcoming to it.”

Mrs Furbert encourages customers to call in their orders ahead of time so that their food is ready when they arrive.

According to the owners, despite Bermuda’s struggling economy, the Mr Chicken shops are faring quite well.

“Overall business has been good,” she said, adding that their Hamilton business has grown “tremendously” over the last year though the overhead of operating in the city is extremely expensive. “So this new addition is a nice complement.”

On Sundays from 7am-11am Mr Chicken Express serves a traditional codfish breakfast with Johnny bread, eggs, avocado, banana and choice of sauce — tomato or butter and onion.

Hours are Monday-Saturday, 11am-10pm; Sunday from 7-7pm. Phone 232-6109 for more information.
