Appleby named ‘Bermuda Market Leader’

Intelligent Insurer's Legal Elite 2013 global awards survey has named the offshore legal services provider Appleby ‘Bermuda Market Leader'

Intelligent Insurer, which covers the insurance industry, said: “In our annual legal survey, we aim to discover which law ?rms and lawyers are leading the ?eld in the insurance and reinsurance space.”

The top Bermuda result was described as “reflect(ing) little change, with Appleby dominating the top spot.”

The Appleby citation reads: “Commended as an Overall Market Leader in Bermuda, Appleby was established (in Bermuda) by Major Reginald Appleby, who commenced practice in the late 1890s.

“Involved in a number of high pro?le disputes over the years, the insurance and reinsurance dispute resolution team is a recognised industry leader. The ?rm covers a variety of demands including claims and noti?cation arising from the sub-prime debacle, to the most complicated major catastrophes, to perennial market challenges.

“Appleby's experience across a number of jurisdictions, and in all types of disputes, includes coverage and allocation, ?nite risk reinsurance, problems relating to managing general agencies and pools, insurance/reinsurance insolvency litigation, binding authority issues and wordings issues and advice.

“The ?rm's clients include many of the world's leading reinsurers and insurers, as well as insurers and brokers.

“Utilising the organisation's af?liate companies, Appleby Services (Bermuda) and Appleby Management (Bermuda), the group is able to assist clients from within the Bermuda of?ce with both corporate and trust services.

“These services range from the incorporation of a company or formation of a trust in Bermuda to providing advice/opinions on ?nance or other general corporate and commercial issues as well as insurance management and accounting services.

“Ever expanding, Appleby ventured further into China in 2012 with an of?ce in Shanghai, offering a full range of ?duciary and administration service to clients in mainland China and internationally.”

Appleby stated: “The Legal Elite rankings reflect continued praise for Appleby's Bermuda insurance team, led by global insurance head and Bermuda corporate and commercial head Timothy Faries, which specialise in advising on the establishment, regulatory compliance and business operations of insurance and reinsurance companies, as well as insurance managers and brokers based in offshore jurisdictions.”

Mr. Faries commented: “We are pleased to continue to be recognised as ‘Bermuda Market Leader' in Intelligent Insurer's Legal Elite Survey as the results come from those directly involved in our work — our clients — such as in-house counsel at insurers and reinsurers, brokers and reputable lawyers who work within the industry. We feel even more satisfied that the findings are backed by Intelligent Insurer's own research.

He added: “It's a testament to the work we pride ourselves in delivering to our clients, which is maintaining the highest possible levels of our professional reputation and a first-class level of service.”
