Watching electricians arrive in the early morning to shop for supplies with a coffee in hand, and couples browsing the lighting and home decor showroom on the weekend with their cups of java, Lindsay Butterfield and her colleagues at ESC Ltd had a “light bulb moment”.

“We just thought ‘why not let them get their coffee here?',” said Ms Butterfield, general manager of ESC, owners of the electrical supply outfit ESC and the 8,000 square foot ESCape showroom on Mill Creek Road, Pembroke.

“In Europe, you often see cafes inside stores. We thought it would be a good addition to our space, too.”

Tomorrow, ESC will officially open ESCpresso Café, managed by Nonna's Kitchen, the popular Bermudiana Road eatery.

The cafe is located between the supply store and showroom in a space formerly used to store light bulbs.

“When Lindsay offered us the space, we were very excited,” says Nonna's co-owner, Katerina Smith. “A huge number of people work in this area, and have nowhere to go without getting on their bike.

“All the restaurant companies are trying to stay in town serving the same number of people, but people on the outskirts of Hamilton need food service, too.”

The café will serve breakfast and lunch, Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 4pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 3pm.

Breakfast offerings will include fresh baked scones, croissants, French pastries, breakfast sandwiches and wraps.

Ms Smith, originally from Bulgaria, says the café will offer the traditional Bulgarian breakfast dish banitza, a puff pastry with scrambled eggs, feta cheese and spinach.

At lunch, the menu will include homemade sandwiches and salads, two rotating soups daily, vegetarian and beef chili, and a range of gluten-free and vegan options.

Coffee, keto drinks and a range of cold vegetable and fruit drinks will be available all day.
