The Pearson Clinic: Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is seeking to cater to people searching for holistic options for dealing with pain, overall wellness and lifestyle management.Emma Pearson launched the business in January at 1 Crow Lane in Pembroke. The Pearson Clinic focuses on providing healing for both the body and the mind using the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and five element acupuncture styles. After leaving a job in insurance, Ms Pearson moved to London in 2015 to study acupuncture and Chinese medicine. On her return to Bermuda late last year, she opened the clinic. Traditional Chinese medicine incorporates a number of different modalities, including acupuncture, which is the main tool used for general wellness and to treat pain. Mrs Pearson is also trained in cupping, guasha, moxibustion, electroacupuncture, and massage. She said that what sets apart her practice is the integration of five elements into traditional Chinese medicine methods, an approach that considers the emotional wellbeing of patients. Ms Pearson said: “We spend 45 minutes of the first session chatting through the patient’s entire health history, even if it seems unrelated. This helps me to assess their physical wellbeing but also how they are feeling emotionally, which can play such a huge part in the healing process. It can influence how various symptoms, like pain, manifest in the body.”Mrs Pearson specialises in female problems.“I see a lot of women struggling with fertility or going through IVF or menopausal symptoms that they are trying to manage,” she said. “I also see a lot of women who are struggling with menstrual problems.”Along with female health, Mrs Pearson works with patients looking for alternatives to conventional medicine.“In the past 20 years, evidence-based research showing the benefits of acupuncture has grown exponentially,” Mrs Pearson said. “Western medicine is absolutely amazing but, at times, can be somewhat limited in how it helps to manage and relieve certain conditions and symptoms, like chronic pain.“I think people are often surprised when they learn about the vast range of conditions that acupuncture can help with. People associate it as a treatment for musculoskeletal issues like back and knee pain, but it can also help those struggling with chronic pain, fibromyalgia and arthritis as well as IBS, headaches, insomnia and tinnitus, just to list a few. “I also see a lot of patients that are struggling with anxiety, depression and stress, and acupuncture has worked wonders for them. So my day is never boring.” She said acupuncture and Chinese medicine are becoming a lot more mainstream.During an introductory session, which lasts 75 minutes, Mrs Pearson creates a personalised programme for each client and provides suitable treatments for individual cases. Lifestyle is also a major factor in seeing results, and Mrs Pearson also provides advice on managing stress, healthy exercise and nutrition. Additionally, Mrs Pearson offers cosmetic facial acupuncture.Mrs Pearson said you have to learn constantly in this industry if you want to provide the best effective treatments. “There isn’t a day that I’m not researching something either from a Chinese medicine standpoint or finding research to better understand western medical science,” she said.
